Can you believe it’s been 24 years since Static Fly released their debut From the Pitt?
The barnburner of an album featured nine tracks that were recorded, mixed, and mastered locally at Soundmill Recording Studios.
Vocalist/guitarist Paul Kuhlhorst recalls his experience with making the album.
“I was hospitalized for two days while we were recording the album,” Kuhlhorst said. “And when I was released, they told me to go home and stay in bed for at least two days, but my brother picked me up, and I went straight back to the studio to finish my vocals instead.”
Now that is dedication!
Anyhow, when From the Pitt was released in ’99, it was before all the streaming hoopla and was available only on CD format.
That was until recently when the band announced that the album is finally getting its due and is now available on all the major streaming platforms.
If you’ve never got to feast your ears on this bad boy, now is the time!
As of press time, Static Fly have no shows scheduled, but they plan on getting the ball rolling this fall and are already discussing plans to celebrate their approaching 30th anniversary as a band.
Top off on all the Topher you can
Local standout Topher Beyer is turning 36 years old soon and has put together the perfect celebration.
On Saturday, July 15, Beyer will perform with all three of his bands for Tophapalooza at O’Sullivans. That means you will have the opportunity to see The Last Plane Home, Minivan Hot Tub, and The Paper Heart all in one night. That’s more Topher than anyone should ever have in one setting.
The show will get under way at 10 p.m., so be ready for a night of good music and birthday shenanigans.
New single from Necromoon
Local band Necromoon have released a new single titled “Orange Peel” that can be found on your favorite streaming platform.
The new track is from the upcoming album Nature Makes Our Graves for Us.
They even released a music video for the five-minute single that can be viewed on YouTube.
Their next local show will be at the Brass Rail on Friday, July 14, with Tears of a Martian and Split Parasite.
After that, they hit the road performing gigs in Kentucky, Ohio, and Michigan.
Third album coming from Funayūrei
The synthwave duo Funayūrei have announced that they are putting the final touches on their third album, Open Me Carefully.
According to a band statement, “We have a few songs to finish and some that are on the fence, but we are in the late stage of writing and recording. The goal is to have it out in September maybe?”
The good news is they plan to release a song or two periodically leading up to the release.
The first track, “Wait for Me,” will be released on July 31. If you went to their show at the Brass Rail when they opened for Serepta, they opened their set with that track.
Live album from To Breathe Again
To Breathe Again will release a live album, The Final Muse, on July 21 on all streaming platforms. The album was recorded at the band’s last show they got to play at The Muse.
In addition, you can join the band on their Twitch channel at midnight on July 21 to watch the premiere of the show and hear full commentary during the broadcast.
Also, on Sunday, July 23, they will perform at The Eclectic Room with Fight from Within, Beyond the Fathoms, Persevere, Withered Veins, and Heartsick (Lansing, Michigan).
Tickets are available via TicketWeb.
The Holy Nothing drops new single
“God’s Awful Children” is the name of the new single by the stoner/heavy rock outfit The Holy Nothing. With lyrics, “We all get the shakes when the fever sets in, we were all born of saints but we’re married to our sins,” sounds deep but trust me, it rocks!
The band is working on an EP they hope to have out by late summer/early fall. You can catch them on Thursday, July 27, at the Brass Rail with Loomspore and Observer.
