Layla Mulks, 15, first became involved in music while attending Riverdale Elementary School in Dekalb County when the school’s music director, Adam Strong, began recruiting for band.

“I began playing music after seeing sign-ups posted to join band at school,” Mulks said. “Growing up I had always wanted to be a percussionist, so I immediately knew what section I wanted to be a part of. I started playing marimba in seventh grade as a part of my school’s indoor percussion ensemble.”

She has taken advantage of all the musical opportunities provided to her as she continues her schooling.

“I have been fortunate enough to be able to perform with an amazing marching band, indoor percussion ensemble, and to perform in solo settings since seventh grade,” she said. “My favorite memories are performances themselves, and what makes them most special to me is the indescribable feeling you can only get from performing and the wonderful people I have been able to perform alongside of.”

Her focus continues to be on school where she hopes to be involved in music on all fronts.

“My musical ambition for the future is to continue to perform in college. Along with playing marimba, I am involved in my school’s drumline, and I aspire to perform with a college drumline in the future. I also want to continue to grow as a marimba player and performer as I advance through high school and college.”
