Graydon Brath, 17, began his musical training on the piano, as did all of his siblings. 

Eventually each of them, with the support and encouragement of musical parents, found an instrument which they wanted to pursue. 

For Brath it was the bass, and his early years were spent learning in Minnesota, where he had a very special musical experience thanks to his involvement in the Greater Twin Cities Youth Symphonies.

“After every year, we always do a big concert with all eight or so orchestras,” Brath said. 

“At the end of this concert, every person comes back to play Gustav Holst’s Jupiter. There are players lining the aisles and balcony. It is a wonderful experience that can’t be described.”

While still living in Minnesota, Brath studied with Mark Kausch, but since his move to Indiana in eighth grade, he has studied bass with Brad Kuhns, himself a noted bass player in the Fort Wayne music community. 

Brath has yet to decide what the future holds but intends to continue to play in some capacity.

“I’m sorry to say that I don’t have any big dreams or ambitions of where my music would take me,” he said. “I definitely want to keep playing when I’m older. I think it would be fun to keep playing in an orchestra throughout my adult life.”
