The year was 1982, MTV fresh on the television, Ozzy Osbourne was eating bats on stage, and Bob and Cindy Roets turned a dream into reality when they opened Wooden Nickel Records in Fort Wayne. What began as a full-line record and cassette store, quickly soared with the rise of CDs, and had them going from one store to six scattered throughout the city.
Now, 40 years later, Wooden Nickel is still going strong with the three locations and are about to celebrate this incredible milestone.
On Saturday, July 30, Baker Street Centre will be the setting for the 40th Anniversary party that will include giveaways, cake, limited edition 40th Anniversary t-shirts, and live music by Adam Baker & The Heartache and The Sweetwater All Stars.
Hosting the festivities will be WXKE’s Doc West.
Doors will open at 6 p.m., with music beginning at 7 p.m. Tickets are only $10 and available at bakerstreetcentre.com, all three Wooden Nickel locations, and etix.com. A portion of all ticket and merchandise sales will be donated to Community Harvest Food Bank.

Kid of Kid ’n Play fame brings comedy to town
On Sunday, Sept. 11, at 7 p.m., Christopher “Kid” Reid will bring his stand-up act to Fort Wayne for a performance at Piere’s.
During the peak of his career with the rap duo Kid ‘n Play, Reid was notable for his 7-inch, hi-top fade and freckles. He also has many acting credits on his résumé including such films as House Party, House Party 2, House Party 3, and Class Act.
Trust me, I’m as curious as you are of what Reid’s stand-up is all about. All I know is this something we must check out.
Tickets are available at etix.com or at all Wooden Nickel locations and Neat Neat Neat Records.
