A pandemic isn’t enough to stop the West Central Neighborhood Association from holding its annual Home & Garden Tour. Although the virus added some challenges, it has also brought about some exciting changes. Homeowners in this historic Fort Wayne district will not be allowed to open their houses to the public this year, but the organizers of the event have developed a free app that attendees can use in conjunction with the self-guided tour, enhancing the experience virtually. During their journey through the neighborhood, participants can use the new “Pocket Sights” app to read historical information about each residence on the tour as well as view interior photos of each house, along with images of some beautiful and unique gardens. The tour takes place Sept. 12-13 from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. and traditionally starts at the Swinney Homestead at 1424 W. Jefferson Blvd., but homes can be viewed in any order. As special points of interest, St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church will host its expert gardener to talk about historic gardening, native plants, and composting. ArtsFest will again take place as part of the tour, offering a chance to view pieces from 35 different artists as well as offer you a chance to satisfy your appetite at one of the food trucks on hand. All booths will be spaced further apart than normal to allow for more social distancing and air flow. Face masks are required, and vendors will have hand sanitizer available for visitors.
