Some things are synonymous with Fort Wayne. Like the Komets, Powers Hamburgers, and the Lincoln Tower, the Johnny Appleseed Festival helps define the Summit City. Now in its 44th year, the festival continues, celebrating the life of John Chapman, aka Johnny Appleseed, with a weekend full of vendors, food, crafts, music, and reenactments. This unique festival takes place under strict conditions: no modern conveniences are allowed. All cooking is done over an open fire and vendors are required to dress in 19th century styles, selling their products, demonstrating trades, and entertaining people with what was available during that period. You won’t find elephant ears or a Ferris wheel at this festival, but you can count on plenty of fun at the farmers market, a children’s area that includes a straw maze, face painting and games from the past and, of course, food booths. Don’t forget to stop by Chapman’s grave while you’re there to pay your respects to a folk hero that has served as the subject of countless children’s books, movies, and stories over the years. Leave an apple; it might bring you good luck.
