Alpaca enthusiasts have reason to rejoice as the premiere alpaca event of the year returns to the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum March 13-15. This event features alpaca breeders from across the country converging on the Summit City. The 30th anniversary AOA National Alpaca Show features more than 800 alpacas entering the show ring and competing to be a National Supreme Champion. The show will be comprised of classes judging conformation, or the shape and structure of the animal, and fleece quality in many categories for both Suri and Huacaya alpacas.Attendees get to watch the show and walk through the barn to view these native South American animals plus buy the latest in alpaca fashions, yarn, alpaca socks, and other souvenirs. You won’t want to miss the opportunity to get a picture in the alpaca selfies booth or take part in an alpaca yoga class.Alpacas are bred specifically for their fiber and are considerably smaller than llamas. They were never intended to be working animals. Alpaca fiber is a commodity similar to sheep’s wool and is used for making knitted and woven items.
