Since getting their start at the Aspen Music Festival, the Sybarite5 quintet have been dazzling audiences for a decade. Area fans will get a shot to watch the group when Sybarite5 performs Tuesday, March 22, at Rhinehart Recital Hall at Purdue University Fort Wayne.
“Audiences can expect an exciting string ensemble that plays a variety of repertoire,” said Dr. David Steffens, director of the PFW School of Music.
Described by organizers as “equal parts passion, grit, and musical delight,” the group is sure to “wow” audiences with their post-genre style.
Outliers, their most recent album, introduced fans to all new music and debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Traditional Classical Chart.
The quintet boasts a list of notable venues in its performance history, including the Library of Congress and Carnegie Hall.
Sybarite5 is also known for their educational activities, working with thousands of students annually, according to their official website.
The group works with colleges and universities to offer composition classes and experience in writing for a string quintet in a program they call “So You Think You Can Compose.”
The Washington Post described a performance by Sybarite5 as “An intriguing and hugely enjoyable evening in every way.”
Their style stands out in several reviews of the quintet’s ability to charm audiences.
Strings Magazine characterized Sybarite5 as a “New York–based group of gifted young string musicians who have gained a reputation for juxtaposing the likes of Stravinsky with Radiohead, or Dvorák with Led Zeppelin. But that doesn’t even begin to describe the range of their eclecticism or the depth of their repertoire.”
