This year’s major movie releases are being rescheduled for the fall and for 2021, and the smaller films are either getting shelved for now or released via streaming services.

Let’s look at some of the major films that have been rescheduled:

A Quiet Place Part 2

Actor-turned-director John Krasinski’s follow-up to his surprise horror hit has been rescheduled from April 24 to August 20.

The Batman

Matt Reeves’ take on the Dark Knight, starring Robert Pattinson, Colin Farrell and Zoe Kravitz, has been rescheduled from June 25 to Oct. 1. Fingers crossed this one is good.

Candyman

Nia DaCosta’s Jordan Peele-penned remake of one of the scariest flicks I’ve ever seen has been rescheduled from June 12 to Sept. 25.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

This poorly titled, completely unnecessary Marvel film, due to delays in shooting, has had its release date tentatively moved from May 7, 2021, to March 25, 2022.

First Cow

Kelly Reichardt’s latest gem played for a few days before being pulled. A24 will re-release the film at a later date, once theaters reopen. This is a good sign. This suggests that A24 has Oscar hopes for First Cow.

The French Dispatch

Wes Anderson’s latest ensemble dramedy was set to come out on July 24 and will now be released on Oct. 16.

Fingers crossed we can go to the theaters by then, because this is one I’ve been hotly anticipating.

Last Night in SoHo

At long last we have a new Edgar Wright movie. Or we did. It was set to come out on Sept. 25 but has since been pushed back until April 23, 2021. Boo!

The Many Saints of Newark

Also known as “The Sopranos prequel,” Saints was set to come out on Sept. 25, but will now be released on March 12, 2021. COVID-19 is awful, but hey, at least 2021 will probably be one of the best years at the movies ever.

No Time to Die

Cary Joji Fukunaga’s sure-thing James Bond masterpiece, clocking in at just under three hours, was set to come out on April 10. Look for it now on Nov. 20. Well, maybe. Nothing is certain anymore.

Tenet

Perhaps the most anticipated film of 2020, Christopher Nolan’s new mindbender has been moved from July 17 to August 12. I suspect it will be pushed back again. And again. Don’t be surprised if this ends up being a Christmas season release.

I could also see Tenet dominating at the Oscars next year due to limited competition.

Top Gun: Maverick

This one was going to be big. Huge. Maybe even THE summer film of 2020. But, rather than coming out on June 24, Maverick will come out on Dec. 23. Maybe. I could also see this one coming out on VOD.

Untitled Elvis Movie

Baz Luhrmann’s surely-awful Elvis film, starring Tom Hanks, Rufus Sewell, Austin Butler (as Elvis), and Maggie Gyllenhaal, has been moved from October 1, 2021, to November 5, 2021, due to a production stoppage. Maybe they should just scrap this one?

Wonder Woman 1984

Patty Jenkins’ long-anticipated sequel to Wonder Woman, starring Gal Gadot in the titular role (as well as Chris Pine, Pedro Pascal, Connie Nielsen, Robin Wright, and Kristen Wiig in supporting roles), has been pushed from June 5 to August 14.

It’s doubtful that it will actually see an August release at this rate.

Hang in there, friends. Movies will be back. Someday.
