Shazam! took the No. 1 spot at the domestic box office for the second consecutive weekend, selling another $25 million. This brings the flick’s 10-day sales total to $95 million in the U.S. and $221 million worldwide. Not bad for a Warner Bros.-produced superhero film that was produced for only $100 million.
The film, which stars Zachary Levi, Meagan Good, Mark Strong, Djimon Hounsou, Cassandra Ebner, Adam Brody, and Asher Angel, currently has a score of 71/100 on Metacritic. Looks like a movie to see at home to me.
Also at the Box
Tina Gordon Chism’s new comedy, Little, starring Regina Hall, Issa Rae, and Marsai Martin, opened at No. 2 with just under $16 million in sales while Neil Marshall’s remake of Hellboy bombed, selling just $12 million over its first weekend of release while receiving a score of 31/100 on Metacritic. Ha, thirty-one.
Paramount’s remake of Pet Sematary took the No. 4 spot at the box with another $10 million in sales, bringing the $21 million film’s 10-day sales total up to $41 million in the U.S. and $77 million worldwide. Paramount was hoping for It numbers with this, but alas, you can’t just remake any Stephen King film and expect it to hit.
Next up at No. 5 is Tim Burton’s Dumbo, which sold $9.2 million over its third weekend of release, upping the film’s 17-day sales total to $90 million in the U.S. and $267 million worldwide. Dumbo has a score of 51/100, which is par for the course for Tim Burton anymore.
Also of note
Us is officially a major hit, selling another $7 million this past weekend, brining the film’s worldwide sales total to $236 million. For reference, Get Out sold $255 million worldwide.
New in Theaters
This weekend will see the release of Roxann Dawon’s new drama, Breakthrough, starring Topher Grace and Chrissy Metz.
Also out everywhere is a new Warner Bros’ R-rated horror flick called The Curse of La Llorona that a lot of people seem to be excited about. Looks OK. I guess.
New in Streaming
Netflix just released a handful of worthwhile movies, including the excellent The Perfect Date, which announces actor Noah Centineo as the It Boy of the future. This guy is the real deal — chops, looks, instincts, charisma, humor. Within two years I expect Centineo to be the biggest leading man in America.
Another Netflix flick called The Silence, starring Stanley Tucci and Sally Draper, came out and is very much worth checking out.
Also check out Amazon’s new Donald Glover film, Guava Island, which was directed by Hiro Murai. It’s very good.
Jennifer Kaytin Robinson’s new film, Someone Great, was also just released by Netflix. I’ve not seen this one yet, but it’s an R-rated NYC-set romcom starring two of my current favorites, Lakeith Stanfield and Gina Rodriguez, as well as Brittany Snow and my all-time biggest crush, Rosario Dawson. Definitely looking forward to this one.
