The sequel to The Secret Life of Pets, titled The Secret Life of Pets 2, ran away with the top spot at last weekend’s domestic box office with a decent-enough total of $47 million in sales. Add in foreign sales and the sequel to Chris Renaud’s first Pets film has already sold $97 million.
The movie is voiced by Patton Oswalt, Kevin Hart, Harrison Ford, Jenny Slate, Tiffany Haddish, Lake Bell, and Dana Carvey and was scored by Alexandre Desplay. That’s just about the best looking roster of talents for a children’s film since Wes Anderson made the great Isle of Dogs well over a year ago now.
Despite some seriously mixed reviews (the movie currently has a score of 55/100 on Metacritic), Pets 2 looks very much like a film worth seeing whether you’re a kid, an everyday consumer of pop culture, or a cinephile who occasionally likes a well-made animated film about cute things.

Dark Phoenix, the latest film in the X-Men franchise, opened to disappointing numbers, selling just $33 million in domestic tickets over its first three days of release. But here’s the thing about that: add in foreign sales and Dark Phoenix has already sold $140 million in tickets. Look for this one to go on to sell somewhere between $600 million and $700 million over the lifetime of its theater run despite receiving mostly negative reviews. The movie, which was written and directed by Simon Kinberg, stars Sophie Turner, James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Tye Sheridan, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Even Peters, and Jessica Chastain. Not a bad little crew, this one. A shame to waste such a talented cast on such weak, played out material.
Disney’s live-action remake of Aladdin, starring Will Smith as the blue Genie, took the No. 3 spot at last weekend’s box office with $24.5 million in sales, upping the flick’s 17-day sales total to $232 million domestically and $604 million worldwide. Whoa. This one has wheels. This one might even break the billion dollar mark before it leaves the multiplexes.
Godzilla: King of the Monsters, sold $15.5 million over its second weekend, bringing the film’s 10-day U.S. total to $78 million. Godzilla films (and monster films in general) tend to do well worldwide, and this is no exception, with Godzilla already nearing the $300 million mark internationally.
And finally, at No. 5, we have Dexter Fletcher’s Elton John biopic, Rocketman, which sold another $14 million over the weekend. So far the rock n’ roll musical has sold $50 million domestically and $101 million worldwide. So not quite Bohemian Rhapsody numbers, but this is supposedly a much better film.
New this Week
Now that we’re in the full swing of the Summer Blockbuster season we can expect a big movie or two to open every weekend going forward for some this. This week will see the release of Men in Black: International, starring Chris Hemsworth, Tessa Thompson, Liam Neeson, and Emma Thompson (no relation). F. Gary Gray directs and whoa does this one look like a good time at the movies.
Also out everywhere is a new installment in the Shaft series that stars Samuel L. Jackson, Alexandra Shipp, Regina Hall, Richard Roundtree, and Jessie T. Usher. Oh, and ScreenTime favorite Method Man, of course.
And finally we have the expansion of buddy comedy Late Night, starring Mindy Kaling, Emma Thompson, John Lithgow, Amy Ryan, and Ike Barinholtz. This one made waves at festivals and looks to be a surprise hit in the crowded summer release season.
Stay tuned in the coming weeks as we look at everything from Toy Story 4 to Yesterday, The Lion King, Stuber, and more.
