Christmas at the University of Saint Francis is a special time, and the school celebrates the season with two traditional events.

The Lighting of the Lake and Living Nativity are highlighted events for many every year and will be presented this year Sunday, Dec. 8.

The blessing of luminaries during the Lighting of the Lake takes place at 6 p.m. at Mirror Lake and are dedicated to those who hold special places in our hearts.

The ceremony honors the Christmas creche tradition, started by St. Francis of Assisi in 1223, that reenacts the birth of Christ. Tradition has it that luminaria lighted the way for Mary and Joseph in their search for lodging in Bethlehem.

Immediately following the blessing, members of the university community will portray the Living Nativity.

End the evening with complimentary cookies and hot cocoa at Achatz Hall of Science.
