In October, Michael and Gloria Hall said they were getting the ball rolling to sell Fort Wayne culinary staple Powers Hamburgers. Last week, they made it official.

For decades, the downtown burger joint at 1402 S. Harrison St. has delighted local patrons and even garnered national attention for their micro-burgers layered with onions. According to a listing with local Realtor HAI Hanning and Bean, the Halls are asking $695,000.

The couple have been involved with Powers in one way or another about 45 years, including owning it since 1999. When they first announced their intentions in the fall, they said they were committed to finding the right owner — one that would keep the Powers tradition and taste alive.

Savor Fort Wayne on Jan. 17-28

Savor Fort Wayne is just around the corner, Jan. 17–28.

Billed as “12 days of delicious menu deals,” the annual event sponsored by Visit Fort Wayne is a win-win for diners and restaurants.

For the customers, you get a chance to try new food and restaurants at great prices. For operators, it’s a chance to attract new customers and experiment with items not typically on the menu.

You can get a preview of what will be available at savorfortwayne.com and in next week’s Whatzup.

Country Heritage delves into harder spirits

Country Heritage Winery’s foray into spirits is nearing completion.

Construction work on a new LaOtto distillery is underway and expected to be finished this spring. That means liquor like bourbon, vodka, and whiskey could be flowing this summer. And just like the grapes that grow on the property, they’ll raise their own grain for the spirits.

As the distillery comes closer to reality, Country Heritage closed its outlet at the Ash Skyline Plaza. The downtown location had been in place since the fall of 2022.

Timmy’s set to reopen in Garrett on Jan. 11

The wait is nearly over.

After temporarily closing for the fair and festival season, Timmy’s Pizza and BBQ, 105 N. Randolph St. in Garrett, is set to reopen.

In a social media post, owners targeted Jan. 11 as their reopening. Timmy’s award-winning dishes are a popular option on midways and one of the marquee names at Fort Wayne’s RibFest.

More Chipotle, Starbucks on horizon

Two popular chains are expanding in Fort Wayne.

Chipotle will open its fifth location on Dupont Road, just east of Diebold Road, in The Landing at Wood Creek, a new strip mall in the Meijer shopping plaza.

Next to it, Starbucks will set up shop, the 21st such shop in Fort Wayne.

Both stores should be finished by this time next year.

Rescue Mission distributes 4,000 holiday meals

Officials at Fort Wayne Rescue Mission estimate 140 volunteers helped hand out more than 4,000 meals on Christmas Day.

Vendors and shoppers at the YLNI Farmer’s Market contributed to the event. Vendors such as Eliza B’s Bakery and The Bread Guy collected contributions for the Loaves of Love initiative. For every $3 raised, a loaf was given to The Rescue Mission.

The Christmas meal is the second-largest Rescue Mission meal, only behind Thanksgiving.

The Rescue Mission serves nearly 5,000 to-go meals every Christmas. To donate or volunteer, go to fwrm.org.
