The pool of local talent in many aspects of the arts seems almost limitless, and that talent knows no age boundaries.
FAME, Fort Wayne Ballet, and the Fort Wayne Philharmonic are teaming to help one young composer take his or her abilities to a new level.
The 2019-20 FAME Composition Project has invited arts educators to “select one talented Fourth Grade student composer (unless otherwise specified) to meet for project sessions on Oct. 21-24, from 4-6 p.m. at Haley Elementary School in Fort Wayne with FAME Composer-In-Residence, David Crowe, renowned composer and friend of FAME, along with Wendy Bloom, Project Coordinator, and Lauren Ettensohn, Fort Wayne Ballet Youth Company Director, to help create an original orchestral composition to be performed by the Fort Wayne Philharmonic Youth Symphony and Concert Orchestras and the Fort Wayne Ballet Youth Company at the FAME Celebration of Youth Concert on Sunday, Mar. 15, 2020, at 3 p.m.”
Following the initial orientation session, students will continue to meet for composition and “composium” sessions which will allow students to refine their craft and better their work through the leadership of experienced artists.
Students will also work with the Fort Wayne Ballet Youth Company to advance the project over the course of several months.
FAME is encouraging the involvement of students who are “self-disciplined, demonstrate a strong creative nature, and possess the verbal skills needed to communicate musical ideas in large and small group settings. It will also be helpful if the student/s has had at least limited experience reading music playing the piano, the recorder, or a band/orchestral instrument.”
FAME hopes to host a diverse range of participants from around the city. The deadline for registration is Friday, Oct. 4. For more information visit famearts.org.
Arts United seeks nominations
Arts United is now accepting nominations for their 2020 awards through October 11. The Arts United Awards are “Northeast Indiana’s premier celebration of the people, organizations and businesses that make significant contributions through arts and culture to communities throughout our region.”
To that end, any number of area citizens are eligible to nominate individuals who meet that criteria, be it an individual or an arts and cultural organization.
An Arts United volunteer committee will review all submission and look for the nominees to meet the following criteria: significance of the contribution and/or achievement; breadth and/or depth of the population served; length of time and/or importance of the activity dedicated to arts and culture; and degree of creativity and/or innovation.
The awards themselves address a wide range of talents and contributions, including Outstanding Artist, Outstanding Volunteer, Outstanding Collaboration, Outstanding Advocate, Emerging Leader, Emerging Artist, and the Margaret Ann Keegan Award for Arts Education. The nominees and nominators will be announced this December with the award ceremony taking place on January 18, 2020.
