There have been many historic events from 1969 which have been celebrated on this 50th anniversary year, though perhaps none more heralded than the successful trip to the moon by the Apollo 11 team.
With a nice Indiana connection, thanks to Purdue University’s beloved alum Neil Armstrong, there’s no reason to stop celebrating just because July has come and gone.
Science Central provides a touring exhibit which pays homage to not only the Apollo 11 mission but subsequent trips to the moon, displaying historic photos as well as a theater experience telling the story of the United States race to be the first on the moon. The exhibit opens Sept. 21 and remains at Science Central until Jan. 5, 2020.
For those think our moon exploration ended with the Apollo program, there are photos and exhibits from more recent visits, these thanks to the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter which sent images between 2009 and 2015. The exhibit also looks to the future of our exploration of the moon, possible future visits, and how the moon continues to change and evolve.
“One Small Step: The 50th Anniversary of Landing on the Moon” captures our history and our future in an exhibit sure to entertain all generations of space fans. For Science Central hours and more information about the touring exhibit, visit sciencecentral.org.
Best-Selling Author
Fans of Jeannette Walls, the New York Times best-selling author, should circle next Tuesday, Sept. 17, on their calendars. The author of The Glass Castle, a poignant memoir of her traumatic and dysfunctional childhood, visits Fort Wayne’s Embassy Theatre.
Her appearance comes as part of a fund-raising effort by SCAN, the downtown organization which serves 34 northern Indiana counties and assists more than 6,000 families by providing prevention and preservation services for children and families who are victims of or are at-risk for child abuse and neglect. Most services are provided at no charge to those who are helped, which makes fundraising efforts particularly important.
The event, THRIVE, will feature Walls as keynote speaker, sharing her own story while underscoring the importance of organizations like SCAN in helping families in crisis. VIP tickets are $250 and include an exclusive reception with Jeannette Walls, food and beverages, a signed book, and priority seating for the program. General admission tickets are available for $150 and include access to a general reception. Options for book clubs, young professionals, and students are also available. For more information visit scanfw.org/thrive.
Ivy Tech’s Tasty treats
Thanks to their growing hospitality programs, our local colleges and universities have been providing some tasty treats in the last few years. This fall Ivy Tech satisfies the sweet tooth with its student-run bakery which is open Tuesdays through the semester.
The students, part of Ivy Tech’s Hospitality Administration program, will make and sell baked goods, including cinnamon rolls, cookies, muffins, and bread as well as yogurt cups and fresh fruit.
With coffee from their North Anthony neighbors, Old Crown Coffee Roasters, those who need a caffeine fix can also check out the bakery’s addition of espressos and lattes to their menu.
