After a busy summer of hosting STEM and day camps — not to mention inquisitive children and parents looking for some interesting indoor activities — Science Central is already announcing programs for young science fans this fall.
Girl Scouts should pay special notice to an upcoming day of fun when Science Central hosts a workshop helping Girl Scouts in using NXT and EV3 LEGO robots. The workshop helps Girl Scouts earn badges for all levels of Scouts:
Daisies (What Robots Do, How Robots Move, Design a Robot)
Brownies (Programming Robots, Designing Robots, Showcasing Robots)
Juniors (Programming Robots, Designing Robots, Showcasing Robots)
Cadettes (Programming Robots, Designing Robots, Showcasing Robot)
Scouts are required to be accompanied by an adult (either parent or troop leader) who is required to pay admission ($10, but free to Science Central members) to attend the workshop itself. Registration for the workshop is open through September 20.
Coding Club
Science Central is also bringing back the popular Coding Club, designed for ages 10 to 18 and all skill levels. Students will explore the tips, tricks, and techniques of basic computer coding.
Science Central will provide computers, but Coding Club participants are encouraged to bring their own devices.
The Coding Club will meet Sept. 15, 22, and 29; Oct. 6, 20, and 27; and Nov. 3, 17, and 24. This program is free of charge and the deadline for registration is Sept. 8. For more information about either program, call (260) 424-2400 or visit sciencecentral.org.
First Presbyterian Theater changeup
With the recent run of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, which closed earlier this month, the Fort Wayne Civic Theatre officially kicked off a busy 2019-20 theater season in the city.
Next month will see even more season debuts from a variety of arts organizations. But there is one notable change in the lineup for one of the community’s most popular theaters.
First Presbyterian Theater announced that their October performances of Chapatti have been postponed until their 2020-21 season. In its place will be the Tony award-winning play Art, a thought-provoking piece which examines how we define both art and friendship.
The play will run at First Presbyterian Theater from Oct. 10-26. For specific dates and showtimes or to order tickets, visit the website at firstpresbyteriantheater.com.
Unity calls for enrollment
Unity Performing Arts Foundation has announced that enrollment for the upcoming season is now open for students ages 7-19 from around the Fort Wayne area.
There are no tryouts necessary and financial assistance is available.
Enrollment is open for all four of its artistic programs: Voices of Unity Youth Choir, Expression Creative Writing, Oratory Public Speaking, and Dance.
Unity Performing Arts Foundation provides a positive after-school experience within the scope of the arts and has provided remarkable experiences for those who have participated over the years.
The Artistic Program Workshop (Saturday, August 24, noon-3 p.m.) is being held at the PFW Rhinehart Music Center and will provide an introductory look at the upcoming season.
On Sunday, August 25, Unity will host a cookout from 4-7 p.m. at North Side Park, and attendees are asked to bring a dish to share.
Workshops are free, but families and students are required to attend the workshop to receive a wristband for free admission to the cookout. For more information, call (260) 481-6719.
