Who doesn’t love tacos? If you are one of the few who doesn’t, you can stop reading now because I am about to swoon over my latest Fort Wayne taco discovery. It’s possible you’ve driven by this place without noticing it because it is tucked next to a nightclub on North Clinton. Located at 4104 N. Clinton St., Famous Taco serves up delicious tacos, burritos, quesadillas and more. Famous Taco is owned by the same family that owns Las Lomas on Fairfield and Dos Margaritas, just a stone’s throw up the road, but the menu and the experience are unique. It is not a traditional sit-down restaurant. You order at the counter and the food is delivered to your table when it is ready. The kitchen is right behind the counter, so guests can watch their meal being prepared.
The menu isn’t expansive, but who needs quantity when you have quality? The owner says the food at Famous Taco is “authentic” and “prepared like they cook at home.” And that is evident from the first bite.
I tried several tacos, and all were seasoned perfectly and served with fresh onions and cilantro. Simple and oh-so-good.
Of course, what would a Mexican restaurant be without chips and salsa? If you visit, you must order some. They are made fresh in-house; our chips came out warm, an extra bonus.
Here are some highlights from the menu:
Tacos ($7.45): Made with soft corn or flour tortilla and choice of meat. You can choose three tacos or two tacos with rice and beans for the price. Meat choices include steak, chicken, barbacoa, chorizo, pastor, ground beef, carnitas, and lengua. I’ve tried the pastor, barbacoa and carnitas and it’s tough for me to decide which I liked best. All were well seasoned and tender. I tend to default to pastor at most taco places, and these did not disappoint. On Sundays, tacos are on special for $1.50 each.
Huarache ($8.95): A homemade thick corn tortilla loaded with beans, queso fresco, onion, cilantro and choice of meat. Mine came served with a side of grilled cactus as well. I had never tried this dish before, and I was pleasantly surprised. Though it was a bit tough to cut through the thick corn tortilla with my plastic knife, I liked the texture and the taste. The rest of the ingredients were fresh and flavorful, and the grilled cactus was a nice, unexpected treat.
Burritos ($6.96-7.95): All burritos are stuffed with your choice of rice, black or pinto beans, salsa, cheese and sour cream. There are five meat options: steak, carnitas, chicken, ground beef and barbacoa. They also offer a low carb option, the Burrito Bowl (all the ingredients without the flour tortilla), for those looking for something on the lighter side. I opted for the Burrito Bowl, a large and very filling portion. Again, the meat was seasoned well, and the ingredients were fresh and flavorful.
Famous Taco serves beer, wine, margaritas and soda. For kids, the menu offers a small cheese quesadilla and tacos. Our one-year-old daughter loved her cheese quesadilla with rice and beans. There’s also a drive-through. I am always looking for healthier drive-through options, so this was a nice surprise. The owner thinks this will be a big draw for customers who want to grab something quick for lunch or on their way home from work.
