On Saturday, March 22, HerStory in the Making will take place in the The Forum at Electric Works with all proceeds supporting local nonprofits “dedicated to making a positive impact in our community.”

HerStory will explore the powerful history of women and the strength we gain when we come together as a community.

“It’s incredibly powerful to remember the moments that women came together to change the world, and we are excited to be doing so in the spirit of hope and inspiration for each other,” co-coordinator/creator Jama Ross said.

The event contains two segments: a morning and an evening event.

From noon-3 p.m., Embodied SHeroism: An Afternoon of Voice & Movement will recognize the innate gifts and talents that everyday women have plus empowering one other to use those gifts to advance positive change in our communities. It will include lunch, a community panel, and women’s circle.

Then, from 6-9 p.m., The History of She, The Power of We will celebrate women’s history and the strength of unity. During cocktail hour, you will be able to view artwork from local, female artists as well as leaders from organizations in the community that you can learn more about.

The evening will also include spoken word by Ross, Autumn Bakehorn, and Mary Montes, poetry by Isabelle Lehman, dancing by Vicki Gallagher, a historical testimony by Deidre Golden, musical performances by Della Licious, Sophie Smith with Seth Young, Lori Lehman, and the incredible vocal stylings of Mary McLovin, lead vocalist for Loveseat!, accompanied by Ethan Hoff on guitar. Proceeds from the event to benefit Gigi’s Playhouse and Blessings in a Backpack FW.

Furious Bongos pay tribute to Zappa

On Saturday, May 17, The Furious Bongos will pay tribute to Frank Zappa’s legacy at Sweetwater Sound.

In addition to an ever-rotating lineup of jaw-dropping musicians, the band features Zappa drummer Chad Wackerman, bringing to the table seven years of experience playing with Zappa. Together, they don’t focus on producing note-for-note duplications of Zappa tunes. Rather, they let the personalities of the individual musician’s shine. After all, Frank was always about growing and changing and finding new things.

If you consider yourself a serious Zappa-head, or even a mildly curious observer of the Zappaverse, you owe it to yourself to see The Furious Bongos.

Tickets can be purchased at sweetwater.com/events
