For a taste of an authentic German market, head south to Berne for their inaugural Christkindlmarkt (Christ Child Festival) from Nov. 29-Dec. 24 at Muensterberg Plaza.

It’s only natural that with Berne’s Swiss and German roots, they’d celebrate advent with a Christmas street market.

Besides shops, you can enjoy singing, carriage rides, photos with Santa, dancing, food, and drinks. Organizers say the event could expand to benefit community projects including Muensterberg Clock Tower Plaza and Lehman Park.

Among the market festivities will be the glow-in-the-dark parade at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 6.

The market will be each weekend through Christmas Eve. Hours are noon-9 p.m. Friday-Saturday and noon to 8 p.m. Sunday.

There will also be special hours in the days leading up to Christmas, including 4-9 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 23, and 9 a.m.-4 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 24.

After faring so well in downtown Auburn, Tom and Candy Cupka have expanded their Cupka’s Bee Good Meadery to another DeKalb County location.

After opening in February 2023 at 112 N. Main St. in Auburn, you can now find their mead in the South House strip mall at 1308 S. Randolph St. in Garrett, just south of Pizza Hut.

Both shops are open 5-9 p.m. Wednesday-Thursday, noon-10 p.m. Friday-Saturday, and noon-5 p.m. Sunday.

Mobile Bar moves on from Union Street Market

Charlie Horse Mobile Bar is leaving Union Street Market. Operating from a renovated horse trailer, they’ve been at Electric Works about two years.

In a Facebook post, operators say they will continue to serve up drinks at Charlie’s Place, 4201 N. Wells St.

McDonald’s serves up Krispy Kreme treats

Big Macs and Krispy Kreme — what an All-American combination.

McDonald’s began serving Krispy Kreme’s chocolate iced sprinkle, chocolate cream-filled doughnuts, and their original glazed doughnuts this week.

If your favorite restaurant doesn’t serve the treats yet, they will eventually. McDonald’s say all U.S. locations will have doughnuts by the end of 2026.

Hospital has quite the breakfast offering

Here’s something worth a look.

I recently stumbled into a new comfort food while at Lutheran Downtown Hospital, 702 Van Buren St.

The cafe operated by Metz Culinary Management serves meals, grab-and-go goods, and snacks from 7 a.m.-2 p.m. Monday-Friday, with breakfast available from 7-9 a.m.

While I rarely grab meals at health care facilities, I may just start. To my delight and surprise, I found loaded tater tots on their breakfast menu. And when I say loaded, I mean loaded. It begins with a bed of sausage gravy, followed by layers of cheese, bacon, eggs, and chives. A dollop of sour cream really makes it sing.

All of this for under $5.
