ACPL offers summer programs, meals

The Allen County Public Library Summer Learning program is designed to serve as a bridge between school years, encouraging educational skills for all young people, thus preventing the “summer slide.”

Research shows students who do not engage in learning activities over the summer fall behind their peers when they re-enter school in the fall.

In addition to reaching young children and families, the Summer Learning Program also employs teens as a part of Team Read. This component offers teens an income, social and soft skills, communication training, financial literacy, and additional lifelong skills.

The program is open to all ages and abilities and runs from June 1-July 31. Prizes can be earned by reading and completing activities.

The library will also provide free lunches and snacks throughout the summer from June 3-July 26 (no meals will be served June 19 or July 4). Groups should call ahead to ensure enough food is ordered.

Blessings in a Backpack will also provide non-perishable food to youths 18 and younger. Bags of ready-to-eat food will be distributed June 7-July 26. These food services for kids in need are available at the main library and the Georgetown, Hessen Cassel, Little Turtle, Pontiac, Shawnee, Tecumseh, and Waynedale branches.

For more information, stop into any ACPL branch or go to acpl.lib.in.us/readingprograms.
