The newest public art sculpture has been commemorated as Public Works Division and Fort Wayne Public Art Commission celebrated the “5 Point Spin” at the Goshen Avenue and Sherman Boulevard roundabout.
Designed by artist Susan Zoccola, the wheel-inspired sculptural “tree” is 24 feet tall and 21 feet wide. It has three 12-foot branches that contain 15 spoke wheels reminiscent of automobile wheels from the early 1900s. The wheels are brightly colored and of varying sizes, with the largest being 6 feet in diameter.
The sculpture serves as a tribute to the historic Lincoln Highway and motorists who have traveled through the intersection over the last 100 years. Goshen Avenue was part of the Lincoln Highway until 1928.
Nebraska Neighborhood gets new mural
A dedication ceremony was recently held for the mural on the east façade of the building housing Earth Adventures at 1804 W. Main St.
This piece was designed by Jeff Pilkinton to embody and celebrate the neighborhood’s rich history with themes that include the Kekionga Baseball team, The Wayne Knitting Mills, Camp Allen, Jaenicke Gardens, and Swinney Park.
Philharmonic putting on busy show
The Purdue University Fort Wayne Choral Ensembles and Fort Wayne Children’s Choir will perform with the Fort Wayne Philharmonic orchestra and chorus on Saturday, Oct. 29, at 7:30 p.m. at Embassy Theatre.
The concert will include music from the musical that launched Leonard Bernstein’s career and feature a world premiere piece composed by Fort Wayne native Patrick O’Malley, commissioned by the Philharmonic, followed by a mixed chorus that sings racy texts by wayward monks with Carmina Burana by Carl Orff.

Allergen-friendly Halloween Cookie Bash

From 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday-Sunday, Oct. 29-30, the shop will host a cookie decorating party that includes vegan/gluten-free/nut-free/artificial dye-free (four cookies, two bags of icing, and two cups of cocoa) for $20. It’s an in-house event, but if customers prefer, they can take their kits home to decorate and enjoy later.
HallowQueer Market celebrates diversity
Studi07 and The Sassy Vegan will host their second annual Halloween Market from noon-6 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 30, at 3414 Fairfield Ave.
This year’s theme is HallowQueer and will feature several LGBTQ+ vendors. DJ Camren Sproles will be releasing new music, and The Sassy Vegan will serve treats, including an all-you-can-eat soup bar for $10.
‘Into the Breeches!’ opens at Arena Theatre
Arena Dinner Theatre presents a family-friendly comedy Into the Breeches! about the wives of a WWII-era theater troupe who produce an all-female production of Shakespeare’s Henriad while their husbands are at war.
The play runs Fridays and Saturdays from Oct. 28-Nov. 12, at 8 p.m., with a 2 p.m. matinee on Sunday, Nov. 6.
An hour beforehand, English pea salad, bangers and mash with onion gravy (vegetarian must be ordered ahead of time), braised red cabbage, buttermilk biscuit and butter, and strawberries and cream fluff will be served. Tickets are $45 and are available at artstix.org.
