Due to weather, the Adele special, football, streaming, and lack of a killer new release, people mostly stayed home this weekend. The domestic box office only hit $70 million total this past weekend, as opposed to $100 million-plus average of the last couple months.

Coming in at the No. 1 spot was the latest Marvel flick, Chloe Zhao’s supposedly not-great Eternals, selling $27.5 million over its second weekend of release, upping the film’s 10-day worldwide sales total to a decent $281 million.

It’s proof that a MCU film doesn’t have to be good to bring in the big bucks. Look for this one to keep selling for another few weeks.

Does it get a sequel? Yeah, probably.

Also at the Box Office

Clifford the Big Red Dog took the No. 2 spot at the domestic box over its first three days of release, selling $16.4 million. Who cares? Little kids, that’s who. (And probably also parents who need a break.)

Dune continued to roll, taking the No. 3 spot at the box with $5.5 million, upping the film’s four-week worldwide sales total to an incredible $350 million. Whoa. Y’all really like this one, huh?

Bond flick No Time to Die took the No. 4 spot at the box office with $4.6 million in sales while Venom: Let There Be Carnage took the No. 5 spot with $4 million in sales. Venom has now sold an incredible $202 million in the U.S. and $441 million worldwide. Wow. Is Tom Hardy the most famous man in the world right now?

Also of note: Wes Anderson’s new film, the super artsy The French Dispatch, is still slowly filling seats, taking the No. 7 spot at last weekend’s box office with another $1.8 million in sales. The flick has made about $23 million worldwide so far, and is forecasted to end up bringing in somewhere around the $35 million mark. Add in streaming and Blu-ray sales and Wes Anderson wins again. Softly.

New This Week

This weekend is one of those great release weekends in which a handful of very promising films join an already loaded slate of releases at the theaters. The best time of the year for cinephiles is usually mid-November through mid-January, and here we are.

This week will see the release of Jason Reitman’s continuation of the Ghostbusters story with his new film, Ghostbusters: Afterlife, starring Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace, Carrie Coon, Paul Rudd, Sigourney Weaver and more. I hear it’s very fun.

Also out everywhere is King Richard, starring Will Smith as the father of Venus and Serena Williams. The flick, directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green, is already getting rave reviews, with Smith being mentioned as one of the frontrunners for the Best Actor Oscar.

Speaking of the Best Actor Oscar, Joaquin Phoenix is also getting some buzz from his performance in this weekend’s C’mon C’mon, directed by the always good Mike Mills. The trailer looks great, and Phoenix is, for my money, maybe the most exciting working screen actor right now. I can’t wait to see this one in particular. This one is already getting some glowing reviews.

Those are the three biggies, but there are a handful more that will start trickling out into small theaters, including Kurt Vonneguy: Unstuck in Time, India Sweets and Spices, Black Friday, I Was a Simple Man, and The Feast.
