The holiday season doesn’t get any more classic than a retelling of the Charles Dickens story A Christmas Carol. The stage adaptation will be performed at The Honeywell Center in Wabash on Nov. 24.
As everyone knows, the Christmastime staple recounts the story of Ebenezer Scrooge, an elderly miser who is visited by the ghost of his former business partner Jacob Marley and the spirits of Christmas Past, Present, and Future. After their visits, Scrooge is transformed into a kinder, gentler man, filled with Christmas joy and the desire to finally do good things.
Dickens’ classic take of redemption is a lesson that gets us into the holiday spirit by vividly dramatizing how greed and the pursuit of money can corrupt not only an individual but all of society.
This adaptation is a little different than the standard play since it is rich with thrilling music and Broadway-style scenery and costumes. You’ll hear beautiful new arrangements and moving renditions of holiday songs such as “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen,” “Wassail Wassail,” “Good Christian Men Rejoice,” and “Away in a Manger.”
The songs are carefully selected so that the lyrics work well with the dialogue and actions on stage, propelling the story in ways that bring new life and relevance to the narrative. Audiences of all ages will cherish this twist on the holiday classic and will want to make it an annual tradition.
