Fort Wayne Museum of Art invites all for a free day of fun with the family at the Día de los Muertos Family Celebration on Sunday, Nov. 3, from 2-6 p.m. 

Along with checking out the current Día de los Muertos exhibit, the days will also feature traditional dancing, children’s activities, mariachi, folkloric characters, complimentary baked goods, a cash bar, and Mexican food truck with items for purchase. 

While admission will be free during this event, the Día de los Muertos exhibit continues through Friday, Dec. 1. Regular admission is $10 adults, $8 students and seniors 65+, and $25 for families. General admission is free for everyone on Thursdays from 5-8 p.m. Veterans, active military personnel, and their families receive free general admission. 

FWMoA gallery hours are 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Tuesday-Wednesday, 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Thursday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Friday-Saturday, and noon-5 p.m. Sunday.

Fort Wayne Stars shake a leg at Grand Wayne

Dancing with the Fort Wayne Stars is set for 5:30-10 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 7, at Grand Wayne Convention Center. 

The fundraiser for Carriage House, a community support clubhouse for those suffering from mental illness will include Brian Bojrab, Gina Burtness, George Cooper IV, Landon Harrison, Theresa Laxton, Matt McKibben, Lauren Minke, Tom Nill, Jessica Pappert, and Josh Raines showing off what they’ve learned after months of lessons from local professional dancers. They will join emcees, celebrity judges, a live band, and 1,200 fans for a night of music and dancing.

Learn more about animal biomes

On Saturday, Nov. 2, at 11 a.m., Black Pine Animal Sanctuary and Fuller Plants will team up to present a family-friendly workshop on animal biomes at The Venue at Charlie’s Place at 4201 N. Wells St.

During the session, participants will gain insights into the specific biomes the sanctuary’s animals come from, and how they accommodate them in the Midwest. The workshop will also include a terrarium-building session led by Fuller Plants where participants an express their creativity as they design and construct their very own biome terrarium. Enjoy light refreshments while connecting with fellow nature enthusiasts.

All attendees will receive free passes for a Black Pine Sanctuary tour in Albion, which can be redeemed at any regular tour time. 

This event is open to all ages, but any individual under 18 must be attended by a ticketed adult.

Class teaches positive parenting

Positive Discipline Association will hold a parenting workshop at Oaktree Guidance, 6157 Stoney Creek Drive, on Saturday, Nov. 2, from 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. 

Facilitator Ines Oldenburg is a certified positive discipline trainer with more than 15 years of experience using positive discipline in her classroom and as a parent. 

Oldenburg has presented on positive discipline nationwide at conferences and has taught teachers and parents.

Teaching Parenting the Positive Discipline Way (developed by Lynn Lott and Jane Nelsen) is a research-based parent education program that provides a step-by-step approach to starting and leading experientially based parenting groups. 

This program stands alone or offers significant enhancement to any program. It provides experiential activities that reach the heart to inspire deeper understanding and change.

Participants will learn research-based effective tools and techniques for teaching parents how to use discipline that is kind and firm at the same time (non-punitive, non-permissive), gain practice with experiential exercises that help parents go beyond intellectual understanding to be able to respond in empowering ways that teach children, and learn how to use materials and activities in group settings, parenting classes and individual work with families.
