The lineup for Lollapalooza 2023 has been announced. What was once an alternative and rock festival has become decidedly mainstream, looking more like California’s trendy Coachella than the Lollapalooza most of us remember.
The Chicago music festival is approaching its 20th anniversary, which makes it the longest-running festival in the world. Last year’s festival garnered 400,000 festivalgoers, so they must be doing something right.
This year’s headliners for the annual music celebration in Grant Park on Aug. 3-6, include Kendrick Lamar, Billie Eilish, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Odesza, Lana Del Rey, Karol G, The 1975, and Tomorrow X Together. Other notables among the more than 125 artists announced so far include Knocked Loose, Diesel, Morgan Wade, PeachPit, and Foals.
Four-day tickets start at $365, while the platinum package, complete with all-day dining and front-of-stage viewing, starts at $4,250.
The Offspring in our region
Pop-punk rockers The Offspring will not be heading to Chicago for Lollapalooza, but they will take to the road for the Let The Bad Times Roll tour with Sum 41 and Simple Plan.
The 24-city tour has a few stops in our region including Blossom Music Center outside Cleveland on Aug. 22, Pine Knob Music Center outside Detroit on Aug. 23, Ruoff Music Center in Noblesville on Aug. 25, Hollywood Casino Amphitheatre outside Chicago on Aug. 26, and Riverbend Music Center in Cincinnati on Aug. 30.
It might be surprising to some that The Offspring have sold more than 40 million albums during their career with the 1994 release Smash with “Come Out and Play” accounting for 11 million on its own.
Let the Bad Times Roll, released in 2021, is The Offspring’s 10th studio album.
3 Doors Down celebrating
In celebration of their 2002 sophomore album, Away From the Sun, 3 Doors Down are hitting amphitheaters for the Away From the Sun Anniversary Tour.
The band will be playing all of the songs from the album throughout the performances, plus all of their biggest hits.
Away From The Sun features “Here Without You,” which reached No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and “When I’m Gone,” which reached No. 4, helping the album become certified six times platinum.
’90s rockers Candlebox will be the opening act when the tour stops at TCU Amphitheatre in Indianapolis on June 16, Hollywood Casino Amphitheatre outside Chicago on June 17, Michigan Lottery Amphitheatre outside Detroit on June 21, and Rose Music Center in Dayton, Ohio, on July 7.
Two chances to see Queen
With Adam Lambert on vocals, Queen have announced a short run of shows this fall, reviving their Rhapsody: Tour, originally launched in 2019.
You will get two shots to see the band in our region this time around when they stop at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit on Oct. 10 and United Center in Chicago on Oct. 30.
“This tour has lots of bells and lots of new whistles,” Queen guitarist Brian May said in a press release. “We’ve evolved as performers, I think. We’ve stepped up our game. We have better chemistry than ever. We understand each other better than ever, and we feel more free in the way that we interpret stuff. We’re very happy with it. There’s lots of new production and stuff we want to excite you with.”
