About as long as history has been recorded, the winter solstice has been has been marked by festivals and rituals celebrating the shortest day of the year and the impending arrival of longer days and warmer weather.

On Wednesday, Dec. 21, Fort Wayne Trails encourage walkers and bikers alike to head to Salomon Farm Park for a hike or a ride to celebrate the day.

The 1.65-mile walk begins at 5 p.m. and the 6.5-mile bike ride begins at 4:45 p.m. At 5:45 p.m., attendees can gather at the park for free hot drinks, grilled goodies, and a bonfire.

Attendees are encouraged to bring a flashlight, a battery-operated lantern, or battery-operated lights to illuminate the walk or bike ride. They’re also encouraged to create a glow costume or decorate their rides.

The event is free and open to the public.
