Quick Hit: Chess on the Riverfront
Free event slated for Sept. 18 at Promenade Park
The ancient game of chess takes center stage Sept. 18 as local clubs Fort Chess and Stan Chess Club offer free opportunities to learn and play at Promenade Park.
Instructors will be on-site from noon-6 p.m. to teach anyone interested in learning one of the oldest strategic board games, where the ultimate goal is to capture their opponent’s king. Since at least the 15th century, chess has been known as the “royal game,” because of its popularity among the nobility, and it experienced explosive growth during the 20th century, making it one of the most popular board games in the world.
This event is open to all ages and skill levels. Players may bring their own board or use one of the many boards on site.
