The Gatlin Brothers
September 12, 2019
When the history of country music is finally written, at least a couple of paragraphs needs to be devoted to The Gatlin Brothers, the country/gospel group that have been dazzling audiences for more than 60 years.
Borrowing close-harmony vocal techniques from bands like the Louvins and the Everlys, Larry Gatlin and the Gatlin Brothers scored a number of hits during the ’70s and ’80s, including chart-topping songs like “Broken Lady,” which won a Grammy, “All the Gold in California,” “I Don’t Wanna Cry,” and “Love Is Just a Game.”
Often, the group walked the line between intricate, inventive country and pure commercial material, blazing the trail for many of the most popular country artists today, remaining on the charts until the late ’80s when more contemporary artists took the gauntlet from their forefathers and ran with it in a new direction.
Nevertheless, The Gatlins have remained an act that is in high demand in concert and they continue to tour steadily. With 60 years’ worth of material to choose from, there’s always enough variety to keep everyone on the edge of their seats wondering what they are going to play next. The only thing that’s guaranteed is that when Larry, Steve, and Rudy hit the stage, it’ll be a night full of family fun and music you likely already know by heart.
