In recent years Voices of Unity have put Fort Wayne in the musical spotlight through their successes in international competitions. The choir has also hosted some pretty amazing concerts over the years, demonstrating their gift for all genres of music. That high profile continues with a special upcoming event which pays tribute to some of the most beloved film music of all time with a special guest who has also provided his fair share of great music.
With its performance of Summer Spectacular, a Tribute to Disney, the Unity Performing Arts Foundation is partnering with Parkview Health and bringing in a guest musical director Myron McKinley, best known as musical director and keyboardist for Earth, Wind & Fire. McKinley is returning to the area just a few short months after Earth, Wind & Fire rocked the Embassy to a packed house. This time he returns to lead the talented Voices of Unity choir as they tackle the Disney song catalog.
Also leading the choir will be its long-time director Marshall White who deserves tremendous credit for the success that the Unity choir has had over the years. Bringing together a wide-range of area youth and pulling together their distinctive and soulful harmonies, White has created one of the most remarkable youth organizations in the country. The chance to see White combine talents with McKinley is reason enough to check out the June 23 performance which will take place on the IPFW campus at the Rhinehart Music Center at 5 p.m. The timing of the event, just a week before the end of June, makes this one of the last hurrahs before the campus officially becomes Purdue Fort Wayne.
In addition to his work with Earth, Wind & Fire, McKinley has toured with performers like Whitney Houston, Stanley Clark and En Vogue. Those familiar with his work, particularly with the R&B legends EWF, will know that infusing the familiar and beloved Disney music with his distinctive blend of soul, funk and jazz will make for a very special - and very family-friendly - evening of music.
