Matt & The Castronaughts

This album from local boys Matt and the Castronaughts is quite a value. It's short -- just five songs long -- but it's packed with more energy than most albums twice its length. It's pretty much straight-ahead blues rock, but it wastes no time messing around with anything esoteric or unnecessary.

The name of the game here is distortion; the CD's five tunes are covered in a layer of fuzz thicker than mold on a year-old piece of bread. Under the grime, the songs aren't incredibly unusual. "Low Maintenance Woman" and "Good Girls?" are unlucky-in-love tunes, while "Get Along" expresses a little more optimism. "Finally Got the Blues" is a snappy little tale of musical revelation. "What the Heck" starts off mournfully, with feedback and out-of-tune guitars keeping the thing off-balance, but then it kicks into a punky romp.

Believe me, your run-of-the-mill grunge has nothing on the grit of the Castronaughts. You'll want to keep a rag handy so you can dust off your CD player when you're finished listening.
